How do I know if my experience was 'bad enough'?
04 September 2026
You don't need to have had a medical emergency to benefit from a session. A birth debriefing session can provide understanding, emotional support, and reassurance after your maternity experience, especially if your birth was challenging or left you with unresolved questions that bother you even if some time has passed since birth.
You may find a birth debrief helpful if you experienced any of the following:
Persistent flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories of your labour or delivery
Replaying or questioning decisions you made during birth and feeling regret, guilt, or self-blame
Birth debriefing sessions are there to help you make sense of how you are feeling and to process any experiences that felt confusing, upsetting, or overwhelming. You may find it especially supportive if your birth included:
Unexpected medical events or emergencies: Such as sudden complications during labour, postpartum bleeding, or other urgent interventions that were startling or frightening.
Injuries or complications for you or your baby: This could include serious perineal tears, neonatal complications, or any difficult outcomes that have been troubling to think about.
Sudden changes in your birth plan: For example, unplanned interventions like an emergency caesarean, assisted delivery with forceps or vacuum, or induction that felt sudden and overwhelming.
Emotional distress or psychological challenges: Feeling unsupported, anxious, scared, or profoundly overwhelmed at any stage of your labour or postnatal recovery.
Lingering questions or uncertainties: Situations where you felt unclear about what happened, why decisions were made, or if you experienced ongoing symptoms afterwards that weren’t addressed fully.
A compassionate birth debrief offer clarity and understanding of how you felt, helping you learn why you are still feeling the way you feel. It's a safe space to process emotions, and provides you that clarity of thought to feel empowered, more confidence in your recovery and future pregnancies.
In short, if your birth left you with difficult memories, unanswered questions, or emotional distress that bother you even if some time has passed since you gave birth, a compassionate birth debrief can help you feel seen, supported, and more at peace with your experience. Even if your birth was medically straightforward, you can still benefit from discussing your feelings and gaining clarity.
