Frequently asked questions
What can I achieve from a debriefing session?
A debriefing session is designed to give you relief after a perinatal event that you found stressful. You will be leaving the session feeling like you have closed the circle and you can look at the future with peace. This is why normally this is offered as a one-off service.
What shall I expect from a debriefing session?
It is an on-line videocall. You will be telling me your story and I will listen without judgement. I will ask you questions like 'how did you feel when this happened', or 'can you imagine how would you feel if you were free of that pain?'. Occasionally, I ask for a 15 minutes follow up call after one week from the session to check in with you especially if the session was particularly moving.
In person appointments at your home can be arranged. An extra charge may occur according to mileage.
How much does it cost?
A debriefing session is £90 to be paid at booking. A payment link will be sent to you via email. Sessions can be rearranged up to 24 h before. No shows are not refunded.
Who is it suitable for?
The debriefing sessions are designed for women who have given birth and experienced a difficult time during their pregnancy, childbirth or postnatal period and breastfeeding and feel need help to unpack what happened.
Do I have to prepare anything for the session?
You should know what you want to talk about with me, so we can focus on this during the session. Since the sessions are online, you will need a good internet connection. To minimise distractions and interruptions you should organise childcare for the duration of the appointment which lasts for 90 minutes. I usually advise to switch your phone off, if you can.
Finally, I'd recommend, if you can, to earmark some time for yourself just after the session, to help the session sink in. This could be as simple as a cup of tea.
Are sessions confidential?
Yes. The NMC's Code sets out the standards of performance and conduct expected of everyone on the Register which are available here Standards of proficiency for midwives - The Nursing and Midwifery Council. It makes clear that nurses, midwives and nursing associates must preserve people's right to privacy and confidentiality, ensure records are kept securely, and share information only when appropriate.
The Code is also clear that professionals must adhere to the law – such as the Data Protection Act and the UK GDPR.
There are instances where as a Registered Midwife I must disclose information by law, for example when children or adult are at risk of , or have suffered abuse.
Will my session be recorded?
Not routinely. Occasionally I will ask your consent to record your session and this is to facilitate my practice reflection. The recording will be destroyed as soon as possible.
What do I do if I still need help after your session?
Women who have experienced major birth trauma or are suffering from PTSD can access a combination of national support and local Dorset services which offer specific counselling. This is often done over a number of sessions.
If you think you need further support, please consider discussing how you feel with your GP or Health Visitor. There are lots of reading material available at Resources — Birth Trauma Association and Perinatal Mental Health - The Birth Republic.
Dorset specific support can be accessed here Maternal mental health service :: Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust .
Can I leave a feedback?
Yes. I collect feedback regularly after the sessions. All feedbacks are anonymous and will be used to improve the service.
Can I have a debriefing session if I had a termination of pregnancy?
Yes. I have a special interest in both social and medical termination of pregnancy. The session is run exactly like a debriefing session, with same length and cost.
Who is it not suitable for?
The debriefing sessions are not designed for complex problems or trauma that have their origins before your pregnancy.
I don't go through medical records because the sessions are focussed on you. If you are seeking specific answers from birth events, I would recommend you to contact the Maternity Hospital where you gave birth and ask for a Birth Afterthoughts appointment.
A debriefing session is not counselling. If you are looking for counselling, please talk to your GP or Health Visitor.
What days and hours is your service available?
We can find a date and time that suits us both. Sessions must be booked via website or by email at irene@harbourperinatal.com
